Gynecology (GYN) Surgeries

Minimally Invasive GYN Surgeries

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopies are a minimally invasive form of surgery that can be performed in a doctor’s office. One of the most common uses for hysteroscopy is to find the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. A hysteroscopy may also be used to diagnose the cause of repeated miscarriage, locate an intrauterine device, implant a permanent form of birth control, or remove adhesions.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a type of surgery sometimes called “minimally invasive surgery” where small incisions are made rather than large, several-inch-long incisions. Laparoscopic surgeries involve less recovery time, pain, risk of infection, and scarring.

Total Vaginal Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus through the vagina.

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) is the detachment of the entire uterine cervix and body via the laparoscope.

Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) is the detachment of the entire uterine cervix and body via the laparoscope and vagina.

Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH) is the detachment of the uterus from the cervix and surrounding tissue laparoscopically.

Robotic Hysterectomy

Robot technology is applied widely in gynecology for many procedures including hysterectomies. Our state-of-the-art robotic surgical system allows our surgeons to perform safer & less invasive hysterectomy procedures than ever before. Ask your doctor if this option is right for you.

Urinary Incontinence Surgery

Urinary incontinence simply means leaking urine. Incontinence can range from leaking just a few drops of urine to complete emptying of the bladder. Some other symptoms include an increase in urgency, frequency, and painful urination. Typically, women with urinary incontinence will experience abnormal leaking while coughing, laughing, exercising, or having an overactive bladder. To diagnose this condition, Alexandria Women’s Center physicians will assess a patient’s medical history, perform a physical exam, and may perform some imaging and bladder tests.

There are several types of surgical procedures for different forms of incontinence. You and your doctor may discuss many factors before choosing the surgery that is right for you, including the risks and benefits of each type.

Pelvic Reconstruction Surgery

This surgery repairs weakened layers of the pelvic floor using absorbable stitches or, if required, a reinforcement material such as mesh to strengthen the pelvic floor. Our experienced surgeons use advanced minimally invasive technology and techniques to ensure our patients recover quickly with minimized pain.

Pelvic Reconstruction Surgery may be recommended for the following conditions:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Post-hysterectomy prolapse
  • Bowel problems
  • Overactive bladder syndrome

Endometrial Ablations

Endometrial ablation is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that removes a thin layer of the uterine lining and can help control heavy bleeding. After this procedure the patient’s period should be lighter or possibly stop entirely, restoring the previous quality of life. Recovery from this procedure is relatively speedy with many women back to their normal routine within a few weeks.
