Types of family planning include:
- Barrier Methods
- Hormonal Contraception
- Birth control pills
- Vaginal ring
- Skin patch
- Natural family planning
- Intrauterine device
Barrier methods are when you use a device to bar the introduction of sperm to the eggs; this is effective when used the correct way every time you have sex. With Hormonal birth control, you are taking a hormone that prevents ovulation. The most popular method of birth control is the birth control pill, which contain the hormones of estrogen and progestin. There are a few different types of injections, one type is the DMPA which can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 months. The vaginal ring is a ring that is worn for 21 days and releases both estrogen and progestin continuously. The contraceptive skin patch is a small adhesive patch that is worn on the skin to prevent pregnancy. Natural family planning is a method of birth control that does not involve the use of hormones, but rather by using abstinence or fertility awareness. IUD’s are small plastic devices that are left inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Another form of natural family planning is withdrawal, which prevents pregnancy by not allowing the sperm to be released into the woman’s vagina.
None of these methods can ensure completely that you will not become pregnant. A more permanent option is sterilization, which is a surgical option for both men and women by permanently blocking the pathways of egg and sperm.
