Endometrial Ablations

Endometrial ablation is a procedure which may be recommended for women suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding.  Heavy menstrual bleeding is the most common form of abnormal uterine bleeding.  It decreases the quality of life of up to 25% of women and causes a significant economic burden as a result of the substantial amount of outpatient visits and surgical interventions.  Most patients with heavy menstrual bleeding can be treated with medical therapy or endometrial ablation without hysterectomy.

About the Procedure

Endometrial ablation is a non-surgical procedure which removes a thin layer of the uterine lining and can help control heavy bleeding.  After this procedure the patient's period should be lighter or possibly stop entirely, restoring previous quality of life.  During the last few decades, new nonhysteroscopic endometrial ablation techniques have replaced the older hysteroscopic endometrial ablation methods.  These techniques have provided increased safety and ease to women undergoing this procedure and are safe to perform in an outpatient office setting.  Recovery from this procedure is relatively speedy with many women back to their normal routine within a few weeks.
